Editing a showreel

I'm about to start making a showreel dvd that i can show prospective employers.

My plan is to have all my video work avaible to watch in full and individually accessed through a dvd menu.

I also want to edit an actual showreel comprising of all my video work compressed into one 'trailer' that will give the best impression of my work.

This would probably then be used as an opening to the dvd.

Does anyone have any tips on editing a showreel piece. What sort of length is standard, how it should be edited, what it should include etc...

I like to keep mine short...Shorter the better. I usually tell my editor to keep it under 90 seconds.

The other advice. Have someone else cut it for you. At least for me it is hard to make good choices about material since I am so close to it.

Not only that but it is always good to see what other people find good compared to what you think.

I think short is the key too. I'd forget about menu complications -- just a play button and roll out 90 seconds of your best stuff!

I've just done the same sort of thing. I've incorporated all the productions I've been involved on over the last year and a half onto one DVD, and put together a showreel which lasts about 2 1/2 minutes.

I produced a nice menu and put the showreel and all the productions on the DVD.

That way, they can look at the showreel AND the full production.

Don't include guns. Ever.

Especially when applying to uni, specifically the only one in the country that offers 16mm experience - they'll reject you. [img]tongue.gif[/img]

What is sad is that only one University in all of Limey-Land offers 16mm. Do any offer 35?? Or even Super8 for that matter??
